The Polish police helped a Swiss man recover his two dogs after criminals kidnapped the animals and demanded a ransom of one million Swiss francs, over $1 million.
Rolf Wegmüller, 59, had his two Bolonka dogs stolen by a Norwegian and a Pole. “They knew I had a very emotional bond with my dogs. If I had a million francs at home, I would have handed over the money immediately,” Wegmüller told the Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten.
During the negotiations, the criminals lowered the ransom by half, but Wegmüller said he would only pay if he received some proof that his dogs were alive and well. The pair then sent a photo of the animals in a forest near the Polish border.
It was this image that led the police to the city of Szczecin, where the suspects were found and arrested, and the dogs were taken into custody and later sent to an animal care center.
Wegmüller flew to Poland to see his pets and was relieved to find his dogs healthy. To Notes From Poland, the Swiss man expressed his gratitude to the Polish police and revealed his joy at having his pets back.
“They both mean everything to me. I can’t live without them. The police in Szczecin did the best job in the world,” he said.
